After the video

After the video, read the following post about organizational culture and perceptions, "When worlds collide on a virtual team." Have you been in a situation where cross-cultural communications made it difficult to complete your work? How do you work through work context issues like language, worldview, or multiculturalism? As a distance worker, these types of work experiences will continue to grow.

By describing your context clearly, you can identify the changes that may improve your organizational culture. The context of your organization can drive how people feel about working with you and for you.

Organizational context can be exhibited through many cultural "cues" that include nationality, business practices, industry segment, communication strategies, and even official company languages and vocabulary. It's common to have two (or more) different cultures mesh together to form the work context.

When working from a distance, the organizational context influences peoples' perceptions of the workplace and colleagues.

Additionally, working successfully and being aware of the culture makes you more valuable as a team member, regardless of your work environment.

Connect to the idea

Use the tool "Identifying cultural building blocks" to examine some of the cultural components in your organization. Consider the different cultural elements that surround you in the workplace. This tool helps you examine the differences between the in-office workplace and the virtual workplace.
