After the video

The following post, "Delegation consideration or control: A crucial decision point," is an exploration of delegation, and the challenges with delegating at a distance. After reading the post, consider your own experiences related to sharing work with others. Have you been in situations where trust, or lack of trust, created a serious work issue?

Understanding how trust works in a distance team is similar to how it works in person, but the key concept here is that you will need to use every interaction in distance working to build trust.

Trust is, at the core, shared expectations. Developing trust means that you and the other person in a trusting relationship react similarly to situations and handle problems in a consistent manner that is both predictable and reliable.

By being consistent, setting appropriate expectations, and responding to others’ expectations, you can demonstrate trustworthiness over time.

Distance leaders and distance workers can be intentional about demonstrating trustworthiness.

Using the Trustworthiness Self-Assessment, examine some of your behaviors that help demonstrate trustworthiness. This is a great place to really reconsider your self-expectations, and identify which values are most important to you, and why you feel that way.
